Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart celebrated the study of science on Friday, January 13 with a Science Fair for Lower School students grades 3, 4 and 5. More than 50 of the approximately 100 eligible students participated in this year’s fair. Experiments, demonstrations, collections and displays covering a broad range of scientific topics from physics to biology filled the school’s dining hall. Visitors to the fair learned about magnetism, animal habitats, electricity, outer space, chemical properties, laws of motion, tornadoes, fossils, rocks and minerals, and more. “The Science Fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore topics beyond the realm of their classroom,” says Science Fair Coordinator and fifth grade teacher Elena Nickerson. “It’s a hands-on learning and problem-solving experience that allows children to investigate a selected science topic in detail,” Nickerson says. “Preparing the projects gives them a first-hand look at how ‘real’ scientists work when they research and apply real scientific method.” The Lower School Science Fair is a voluntary activity and is sponsored every other year at Stuart. Students in grades 3 through 5 are invited to participate and are permitted to work individually or in teams. The fair is non-competitive and all participants receive a certificate of participation.
