Sacred Heart Preparatory (SHP) today announced that seven seniors have completed honors

SHP senior Adam Fagin (of Palo Alto) explains the complexities of Multivariable Differential Calculus at his Senior Honors Project Presentation
projects in the areas of History, English, Spanish, Religious Studies, and Math. Founded in 1998, SHP’s Independent Honors Program for Seniors provides the opportunity for highly self-motivated students to deeply examine intellectual issues. This year’s topics were:

 

· Flamenco Dance and the Poetry of Garcia-Lorca, by Carmen-Rosa Wishart of Hillsborough · Facilitating the Dialogue on Abortion, by Julia Garces of Los Altos Hills

· Multivariable Differential Calculus, by Julia Garces (of Los Altos Hills), Adam Fagin (of Palo Alto), Adam Rhine (of Menlo Park), and Kim-Yen Nguyen (of Los Altos)

· The Art of Persuasion: Rhetoric in the Speeches of de Gaulle, Castro, and Reagan, by Claire-Marine Sarner of Atherton

· The American Dream & its Visibility in Speeches of the Past Few Decades, by Stephanie Vertongen of Portola Valley

Each honors student was responsible for seeking out mentors outside the SHP community to

SHP senior Julia Garces (of Los Altos Hills) accomplished the feat of presenting two Honors Projects, entitled Multivariable Differential Calculus and Facilitating the Dialogue on Abortion
assist in their research. This year, the mentors included such scholars as:

 

· Dr. David Kennedy: Professor of History at Stanford University; Donald J. McLachlan Professor of American History; Thomas W. & Susan B. Ford University Fellow in Undergraduate Education; Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2000

· Dr. Peter Robinson: Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University; former special assistant and speechwriter to U.S. President Ronald Reagan

· Dr. Michael Predmore: Professor of Spanish at Stanford; A recipient of the Fulbright, Guggenheim, ACLS, and NEH fellowships, as well as fellowships from the Wisconsin and Stanford Humanities Centers

· Dr. Francisco LaRubia-Prado: Professor of Spanish at Georgetown University; an expert in literary and cultural theory, intellectual history, Spanish literature from the eighteenth-century to the present, and comparative literature

After completing a full semester of research and on-going assignments, each honors student presented his or her findings to SHP teachers, students, and community members on January 4-6, 2006.

After analyzing the ways Spanish poet Garcia-Lorca used the rhythms of Flamenco Dance in his poetry, SHP senior Carmen-Rosa Wishart (of Hillsborough) performed a flamenco dance for the audience at her Senior Honors Project Presentation.
