Under the third grader’s leadership students were permitted to wear pajamas to school, recesses were extended, ice cream sundaes were served with lunch, and donations were requested for Nutre Hogar, a Panamanian organization helping children suffering from severe malnutrition. October 11, 2005 – The Lower School at Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart enjoyed a change of pace last week when third grader Susannah Marttila of Princeton acted as Head of the Lower School. A gift from her parents who bid for the opportunity at Stuart’s annual fundraising auction last spring, Susannah got to make a variety of decisions pertaining to Lower School activities for the day. For instance, Susannah required students to wear pajamas to school and asked faculty and staff to dress as ballerinas. Popsicles were served for morning snack, students were permitted a nap during the day, and recesses were extended by five minutes. Susannah also ordered a special lunch menu including Chinese food and ice cream sundaes. As a new addition to this year’s Head of the Lower School activities, Susannah included a community service component in the day. A native of Panama, Susannah and her family visit that country every summer. While there, Susannah and her brother volunteer at Nutre Hogar, an organization in Panama working to save the lives of children suffering from severe malnutrition. At-risk children, ranging from six months to five years old, are brought to one of seven centers around the country where they can receive the necessary nutritional and medical care required to put them on the road to recovery. The children often have to travel alone to centers as their families are often unable to accompany them. As a volunteer at Nutre Hogar, Susannah played with the children, helped with their feedings, and got them ready for bed. And as Head for the Day, Susannah continued her efforts on behalf of the children of Nutre Hogar. She made a presentation about the organization to her peers and requested Lower School students to bring in a $1 donation or a much needed item, like gently used baby and toddler clothes, towels, crib sheets, or disposable diapers, for Nutre Hogar. The day was a great lesson in having fun and helping others. |
