Thought of the Day
"Learn to let others do their share of the work. Things may be done less well, but you will have more peace of soul and health of body. And what temporal interest should we not sacrifice in order to gain these blessings? St. Philippine

91st Street Celebration Print E-mail
91mass5The school year 2006-2007 marks the 125th anniversary of Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street, New York City.

The school year 2006-2007 marks the 125th anniversary of Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street, New York91mass1 City. To celebrate this landmark, monthly events are being planned for the entire year, focusing on five themes:  Play, Contemplation, Worship, Commemoration, and Inspiration.  Events include all-school service days, spiritual retreats, Christmas caroling and a special Broadway theatre benefit.

To inaugurate the anniversary commemoration, a liturgy and reception was held on September 28 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church. Students, faculty, parents, alumnae and members of the Society of the Sacred Heart gathered for a Mass honoring 91st Street’s heritage, celebrated by school chaplain Reverend John Kamas, sss, and Reverend Pat Boyle, ofm.  Kathleen Conan, rscj, gave the call to worship, followed by a procession of 125 candles, carried by members of the 91st Street community past and present.  Susan Maxwell, rscj, offered a reflection, and the Mass was followed by a lively reception.

Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City, started in 1881, was originally housed in a brownstone on Madison Avenue at 54th Street. By the 1930s, the school had outgrown its original space on Madison Avenue and moved into the Otto Kahn Mansion on East 91st Street; in 1940 the Society acquired the building next door, the James Burden Mansion.  Since then the school has been housed in these two beautiful landmark buildings which provide an extraordinary learning environment.
