INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS (ISEA) July 22–July 28Sprout Creek FarmPoughkeepsie, New York Open to current 9th, 10th, 11th grade students Male and Female$360 plus cost of transportationThe constituency being served are high school students from the inner city of Poughkeepsie. The farm has had a relationship with Cornell Cooperative Extension for many years and the ‘Green Teens’ who will be a part of this program already have an on-going relationship with Sprout Creek. The participants of ISEA and the Green Teens will do many farm projects together: animal chores, gardening, building projects both here and in Poughkeepsie. They will share meals and reflection and recreational activities. This project provides Network students the opportunity to deepen their spirituality in a setting that is inherently inviting of awe and wonder at God’s creation. The nature of the farm environment requires tremendous learning and thinking about many things that most young people have never experienced: among them – animal husbandry, sustainable agriculture, gardening and construction. Seminars focus on such topics as global hunger, the importance of honeybees in the future of our lives, the interconnectedness of lifestyle and environmental impacts. Network students have the opportunity to build community with one another, with inner city youth and with the entire farm staff. A day at Sprout Creek is like no other. You will find that working in a community that includes so many different kinds of animals in a setting with rolling pastures, lush gardens, and barns full of hay, fosters deep spiritual reflection. Sharing the responsibilities for the animals with other students, tending the garden, and cooking meals together from the fruits of your labors build a strong sense of community. In this supportive and inspiring setting, conversations that range from global hunger to the tiniest bug in our soil will offer you intellectual challenges to last a lifetime…We invite you to this unusual educational experience.
